Taking advantage of my man's visit to Paris, we made a weekend trip to see some of the most famous castles of the Loire Valley.

After picking up the rental car, and after the pleasant surprise to be given a higher category than we had booked (courtesy of Sixt), we began the road to Chambord, the largest castle in the Loire. Chambord was the whim of Francis I, who, at first conceived it as a hunting lodge. However, it ended up being a colossal palace. It is believed that Leonardo Da Vinci could be involved in the original design of this incredible jewel of French Renaissance architecture.

After walking along the long galleries and luxurious apartments of Chambord, we started heading towards the next castle of the list: Cheverny.

Cheverny is currently occupied by the descendants of the Hurault, and I have to say that this detail makes the visit even more fun, because it seems you're sneaking into someone's house ... and that someone lives in a castle! What is rather curious. In addition to the King’s rooms you also can visit the private apartments of the family, the park surrounding the castle and the kennel. This latter, I found it quite unpleasant. I will not go into details, but the smell was unbearable ... Anyway, I think Cheverny visit is a must.

Nice pic!

Shattered after the early start of the trip and especially up and down stairs, we went to the hotel. I had booked a room in a hostel which was a farm in the eighteenth century (Auberge de Launay). I found it very cozy on the Internet. Good value. Turned to dust, we went to the room, slept a while and then had dinner at the restaurant, which turned out to be a posh posh haute cuisine French restaurant. This was our choice (I don’t translate it because it sounds great in French):

All washed down, of course, with good red wine of the region.

¡rumbo a Chenonceau!

The next morning, we hit a little linen. Breakfast at the hotel and ... way to Chenonceau!  I found this castle, built on the Cher River, on the foundations of an ancient fortified mill, incredibly beautiful. The visit, as well as to Cheverny’s, is very well organized and only with the guide you can understand perfectly the whole history of the castle. As a curiosity saying that during the Second World War, the castle entrance was in the occupied zone and that its gallery allowed the Resistance to move people to the free zone.

After a quick lunch, we go to the next point on the route: Azay-le-Rideay. This castle is a jewel of Renaissance architecture and its exteriors are amazing. But inside is dispensable. Too bad we have to pay just to see him out. It was the only one which let us a little down.

Cool!

To complete our tour, we had only left to go through the spectacular gardens of Villandry. Villandry is the last great castle built on the banks of the Loire and is known worldwide for its Renaissance gardens of both French and Italian influences. These gardens include the Water Garden (ideal for reading, thinking or meditation), the Garden of the Sun (a unique place consisting of three green spaces), the Decorative Garden (considered as an extension of the halls of the castle) and the Garden Simple (dedicated to growing culinary and medicinal herbs). In addition, Villandry has a very special Vegetable Garden, divided into 9 identical squares with various geometric motifs in its interior and vegetables of different colours creating a multicolour board.

As everything good finishes soon, we started our way back to Paris. Now, with the memories of these dreamlike landscapes still fresh in memory, I just think we have to think very well what will be our next destination so it can keep up this wonderful weekend in the Loire Valley.
